As hours turned into days, I started to question whether anything Ansel said was true.

Surely by now, he had noticed my disappearance. And yet still, he had not come for me. If he truly loved me like he said he did, then how is it I hadn’t been rescued yet?

I didn’t know what good it would have done for him to have lie to me about his feelings. Maybe he was just trying to buy some time with my being obedient and not causing any more problems. Or maybe he was still trying to figure out how he felt himself. I wanted to believe what Ansel had said at the stream that night was true, but it was getting harder to hold onto that hope with the more time that passed.

Being at Roscoe’s pack, however, was a lot different than I had expected. For one thing, it wasn’t nearly as miserable as I thought it would be. Roscoe tried to make a pass at me several times a day at least, but usually, they were well-mannered and sometimes even rather thoughtful and sweet.

I thwarted them at every turn, but a part of me wondered why he went through the effort. If what Ansel had said were true, and Roscoe merely wanted to impregnate me for his own gain, then why act so nice? Not that I wanted him to force himself on me because I definitely did not. But I was a prisoner on his own territory, surrounded by all of his shifters. He had no reason to treat me well and wait for my consent.

“These are lovely,” I said as Roscoe brought an arm full of wildflowers into the tent where I was staying.

Their territory here was set up more like a campground. Instead of having cabins and buildings like Ansel’s pack did, this place was mostly tents. But they were well-structured, and everything about the pack seemed fully collaborative and functional.

“I don’t understand why you keep showering me with gifts.”

“I don’t want you to feel like a prisoner here,” Roscoe said. “You have free reign of the territory as long as you don’t leave the perimeter. Which I realize, still by definition counts as being a prisoner. So, I thought I would at least beautify your living quarters for as long as you are here.”

“And how long will that be?” I asked.

“I can’t answer that because it depends on many factors. But I do enjoy your company, so I hope your stay here with us it’s not cut short.”

As much as I wanted to tell him I hoped it was, I found it difficult to be rude when Roscoe had been nothing but polite to me. My mind felt torn and guilty when I thought about the attack on our pack which he had provoked. Ansel and Leander had both been beaten up badly, and several of our pack members had lost their lives. Roscoe was no good man, even though he pretended to be one. But still, it was difficult to overlook how nicely he was treating me here.
