However, the Petrie Museum in University College, London, has four copper scales (No. UC38049A) that were found at Asyut in Egypt, and allegedly date to the 11th or 12th Dynasty (c. 1800–2000 BC) (fig. 6). It is possible that this dating is wrong or that the plates are not from scale armour. The size and shape are correct but there are only two holes, whereas most scales have at least four holes to enable them to be laced both to each other and to a cloth or leather backing. It is difficult to envision a lacing pattern that would enable two-holed scales to be assembled into armour. However, if the early date is correct, then the plates could indicate a type of proto-scale armour; for example, the plates might be individually laced to the backing but not to each other. If this were true, then we could reverse the direction of influence, and conclude that the Egyptians invented scale armour and that it was only later adopted by the Hurrians.
