CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE
I drive twice round the estate, and don't spot their van. So they've dropped her off and left her alone, is my first thought.
I smile to myself in the darkness. Now all I have to do is finish this one off and my Saturday night out will be complete.
I park the van, looking around to make sure there are no drunks piling out of a fast black. I close the van door and make my way up to the building, quietly opening the door and walking up to her landing. This is where time is of the essence. I pull out the mini-crowbar, a tool that could have been made especially for housebreakers, and jam it into her front door. I know I have to get right in and do the business before she has a chance to grab her phone.
The doorjamb splinters. It's cheap and nasty, and gives little resistance. I'm through the doorway in the blink of an eye, pushing it closed. The flat is in darkness. Good, it means she's most likely in bed. I have to move fast; if I've woken her, she could be calling the police.
I go for what I think is a bedroom, but its bed is empty. Same with the other one. She isn't in any of the rooms. Where the hell is she? Late home from the party?
I can't afford to wait for her to come home. Somebody might see the broken door and call the police. I go round opening drawers and emptying them quietly in her room. I know it's her room because all her stuff is in here. I'll make it look like a burglary. Then I go into her toilet. Take out the piece of tape that has been carefully stuck on the piece of plastic, and gently press it onto the flush handle on the cistern. I look around, then leave. I'll get her later. After all, I know where she works.
I know where they all work.
