Chapter 12

For someone who considered a bagel and coffee a large breakfast for the past decade, after just three days, I was used to Fiona’s morning feasts. In fact, I woke with my stomach growling and by the time I showered and got dressed, I was ravenous. Of course, that could have something to do with all the energy I expended yesterday, especially last night.

That last thought made me move down the stairs faster in anticipation of seeing Conor. As I entered the kitchen and looked around, I was disappointed when he wasn’t there.

“Mrs. O’Leary’s car broke down early this mornin’ and Conor is fixin’ it.” Fiona patted my back as she passed behind me then settled into her usual chair. “He said ta tell ye he’ll be here as soon as he’s through.”

“Okay. Thanks.”

I sat, immediately filled my plate, and dug in. As I chewed, I realized that the normally loud table had gotten totally quiet and looked up. Brady, Ronan, and Mac were hyper-focused on their plates and Fiona watched me, a smile on her face. The only one acting normal was Paddy, who read his paper while he ate.

Obviously Fiona shared the fact that Conor and I did more than sightsee yesterday. My initial reaction to that was embarrassment, but I know that’s just leftover programming from my Catholic upbringing. Gran was cool for her generation, but sex was never discussed in our house, which always made it seem taboo. When I moved out, the men I spent time with were as focused on their careers as I was and I never met their families. So this is all new.

“So where did ye visit yesterday?” Fiona asked.

“Fair Head.”

“Oh, it’s lovely there.”

“It really is and the weather was so beautiful.”

“Where’re the two of ye headed today?” Ronan asked.

“I’m not sure.” Glancing out at the gray skies, I added, “It doesn’t look quite so perfect out there today.”

Mac’s phone dinged and he checked it. After muttering a curse, he shoved his last bite of food into his mouth, chewed, and swallowed.

“Ma, that thing I told ye about needs ta be fixed. I’m gonna go work in the office.”

He picked up his computer bag then stood, nodded at me, and left the room.

“I hope everything is okay,” I said.

Fiona shrugged. “I don’t pretend ta know what he does on that computer, but I do know he has a client that’s bein’ fussy.”

“He’s upgradin’ a site for a big client and they’re not thrilled with the graphics,” Brady said.

“He needs ta hire someone ta do that,” Ronan added, then looked at me and explained. “His ex-fiancée used ta work with him doing the artsy stuff, but since they broke up last year, he’s been doin’ it all and it’s not his thing.”

I spread blackberry jam on the last bite of my toast then popped it into my mouth.

“Well, at one time it was my thing. Do you think he’d welcome my help?”

“Couldn’t hurt ta ask,” Brady said.

I stood and picked up my plate.
