Brody
âWhatâs going on?â I look at each of them, demanding an answer.
âNothing, just talking.â Evie shrugs. âYou know, a little girl time.â
âA little girl time, my ass. Youâre up to something.â I glance around the kitchen. Nothing seems out of the ordinary, except for the dozens of cookies cooling on the counter. âWho baked the cookies?â My attention shifts between Evie and Grace. Iâve tasted Evieâs cooking, and it leaves much to be desired. Not that I would say that out loud, but a little advance warning isnât a bad idea. âEvie, did you make these?â
Evie stands beside Grace and holds a knife loaded with frosting. About half a dozen sloppily iced cookies sit on a tray in front of her. Grace stands right beside her with well over a dozen perfectly frosted cookies. Grace picks up an unfrosted cookie from a cooling rack and slathers frosting on top of it.
âWant one before dinner?â Grace takes a bite of the cookie and closes her eyes. âMmm, so good.â Making a show of licking her lips, then sucking her finger into her mouth, Grace turns my blood from heated to a raging boil.
Iâm forced to take a step toward the kitchen island to hide the effect she has on me.
âOh, sweetie,â Evie bats her lashes at me. âBrody wonât want to ruin supper. If you let him taste one of your amazing cookies, heâll eat the whole lot.â She takes an unfrosted cookie off the cooling rack and nibbles on it. Her eyes light up and she pops the rest of the cookie into her mouth. âOh my, thatâs delicious.â Evieâs eyes close as she savors the cookie.
My focus shifts between Grace and my mother, who perches at the end of the kitchen island on a sturdy high-top chair. Something feels off, but I canât put my finger on it. Evie continues icing her disastrous cookies like nothing out of the ordinary is going on.
âIâll wait.â The delicious aroma of something mouthwatering comes from the oven. I shift over to the oven and take a peek inside. âEvie? You cooked this?â
Evie ices another cookie. âGrace put that together. This girl is a whiz in the kitchen.â
A faint blush fills Graceâs face. I ache to go to her and feather kisses all over her beautiful face. She catches my hungry gaze and sucks in a breath.
âItâs not much. One of my motherâs recipes, bourbon-glazed chicken.â She turns from me to my mother. âAbbie, I was going to fix a salad to go with the chicken. Do you mind getting that started while I fry up some bacon?â
âOh, let Brody do that.â Evie looks me dead in the eye. âHeâs really good at frying bacon in the pan. Arenât you?â Her reference to how I first met her draws a warning growl from deep in my throat.
âCarefulâ¦â I say.
âWhy?â Her innocent doe-eyes are anything but innocent. âMaybe you can get Grace to give you a hand?â
âWhat have you two been talking about?â Mom bats her eyes like she doesnât know.
