Surviving envelopes from Bairnsfather’s Fragments from France postcards. Each one contained a series of eight different cards.

Perhaps following the lead set up by the likes of Bairnsfather and Mackain, the popularity of the depiction of soldiers in the front line meant that a whole range of humorous cards – some of dubious quality – were to appear that dealt with front-line life. Some were out-and-out imitators of the Bairnsfather style – crude and unsigned, they were designed to cash in on the money-spinning phenomenon. Others were more original: while Donald McGill rarely strayed overseas with his comic creations, a fellow artist at International Art Company, Dudley Buxton, turned his hand to front-line life with some success. Talented soldier-artists would also turn their hand to the depiction of their life at the front; usually reproduced from line drawings, these included the ‘Military Terms – Illustrated’ series signed ‘Will. J. Woodall, B.E.F.’ (there are at least four soldiers with this name who served in the BEF), and depictions of the trials of life in the artillery by Reg Carter of the Royal Field Artillery (RFA).
