Juno 1897
HMS Juno is shown soon after completion, September 1897. This class was unusual among British pre-1900 cruisers in having most of the conning tower forward of the bridge structure to give the occupants a much less encumbered view. A small lightly protected torpedo fire control tower was located at the after end of the after superstructure. The 6in mounts on the stern could be trained 30 degrees (19 degrees after the 1904 rearmament) across the centreline, so that at least three 6in could be trained on nearly all bearings. The broadside 4.7in guns were limited to 120-degree arcs. The six 12pdrs in the waist and the 3pdrs in the fighting tops were apparently normally fitted with shields. All ships of this Eclipse (or Talbot) class except HMS Eclipse were rearmed with eleven 6in guns in place of the original mixed battery. Rearmament required adding small sponsons to the waist positions to provide clearance for the larger gunshields. The after four sets of boat davits had to be moved slightly aft from the positions shown in the drawing. A rangefinder was added atop the charthouse. Juno was reboilered (with B&W water-tube boilers) when she was refitted (completed 1904). The anchor-handling boom stepped to the fore edge of the conning tower is omitted in the plan view.
