1. The Mezquita, Cordoba, Spain. Before 785, when this famous mosque was built, Muslims and Christians worshipped on the same site. In the sixteenth century a cathedral was planted in the middle of the mosque: ‘You have destroyed something that was unique in the world,’ complained King Carlos I.

2. The ‘Rainbow Portrait’ of Queen Elizabeth I, c.1600, incorporates Islamic fabrics and jewels that were fashionable at the Tudor court. The combination of trade and political collaboration with the Ottoman Empire made Islamic culture interesting and acceptable in this period.
