Chapter 10

Dinner with Friends

L ilith arranged for Steve and Florence to come over that Saturday for dinner and drinks. All four of them had important jobs, but like Ronnie and Lily, Steve and Flo no longer worked on weekends. This had been a difficult change for the First Nurse. For one hundred and fifty years, she had been at the hospital for many long hours every day. When Steve came into her afterlife, she resisted his suggestion to take time off on weekends, until he pointed out to her that she was very close to professional burnout. She could not help others, if she was not taking care of herself. Taking weekends off was easy for Steve. With rare exceptions, he got his list of newly saved souls every Monday morning. He had no difficulty escorting them all to Gates Level by five pm on Friday.

Lily and Ronnie planned for cocktails inside then a barbecue by the pool. The succubus was a whirlwind of activity that afternoon, as she went on a cleaning spree. When she was single, keeping the house in good order was easy, but a family rode a home a good deal harder. Ronnie was not particularly messy, and he had few possessions to clutter up the place. He only wore a cloak, or one of his smoking jackets with a pair of slacks. He did not even wear shoes, which meant no socks. Also, since he lacked skin, he did not significantly contribute to the buildup of dust in the house. Picking up after him was easy.

Mona was another matter. The little girl left toys and clothes throughout the home. She dirtied a bathtub like a mud-caked sheepdog. The kitchen often had a pool of milk on the countertop, usually with a floating Froot Loop or two. Half-drunk bottles of soda could be found on the table, in the fridge, on a chair, or even the floor.

“Do you think if we cut down her sugar intake it would calm her down?” Lily asked Ronnie, as they teamed up to clean the kitchen.

Unlikely.

“You’re probably right.” Lilith opened the refrigerator. “Let’s see now. Do we have everything? Appetizers. Check. Steaks? Yes. Salad fixings, uh huh.”

Ronnie opened the pantry. Baking potatoes and dinner rolls are present and accounted for.

“The pie is cooling on the counter, and I have vanilla ice cream in the freezer.”

It’s not a coconut cream pie, is it? You know how Steve feels about coconut cream pies. When Steve was damned, he was regularly tormented by demons throwing them in his face. He was allergic to coconut.

“No, good old-fashioned apple pie. Is the wet bar fully stocked?”

I took care of that yesterday, remember?

“Oh, yes. Okay. We have our provisions. The living room is clean, and now the kitchen is too.” Lilith pushed through the swinging door that separated the kitchen from the rest of the house. “All we have left is the powder room and… aghh! What happened to the living room?”

Mona, it would appear.

The little girl was sitting atop a mountain of couch cushions.
