Chapter Twelve

The next morning, Hollis’s eyes opened and her heart dropped when she saw Dylan’s side of the bed was empty. She sat up and looked over to the open balcony doors where she caught a glimpse of his bare feet, ankles crossed and propped up on a small table. She took a deep breath, gathered the sheet around her body and slid out of bed.

Please don’t let this be awkward, she prayed.

God, she wasn’t even sure how many times they had done it throughout the night, had lost count of the number of orgasms that had rocked her body. Her emotions were all over the place so she had no idea where Dylan stood. All she knew for sure was that last night had been absolutely magnificent. She wasn’t a relationship kind of girl and, although she didn’t have a lot of sexual encounters to compare this one with, there had been one major difference.

Emotions had been involved. Because somewhere along the way, she had developed feelings for this scoundrel. Dammit, it was the worst thing that could’ve happened.

Hollis pulled the sheet closer and took a tentative step toward the balcony. Her nerves made her heart pound, but she had to face him. Had to see if he was going to be distant and dismissive. Or, if by some chance, he felt the same strange things that she was trying to understand and sort through.

The storm had blown away leaving clear, blue skies and Dylan sat on the balcony in a pair of cargo shorts, lounging in the early morning sun like a big cat. A myriad of thoughts drifted through his head and he ran a hand over the rough scruff on his face. He lifted the coffee, took a sip and heard Hollis move into the balcony doorway behind him. Dylan turned, unsure of what her mood would be. He hoped for content and satiated.

Hollis stood there, clutching the sheet to her chest, bottom lip caught between her teeth. A ray of sunshine hit her just right and shot golden highlights through the mass of copper hair that framed her face. He’d never seen her look so vulnerable.

Or, so mouthwatering.

“I thought-” she began.

“I got-” he said.

They both stopped short and Hollis flushed. “Sorry, you go,” she said, and her fingers knotted into the sheet. She couldn’t help but admire his perfectly-sculpted, sun-bronzed chest. And, God bless it, she wanted to lick those tattoos right off. Again.

Dylan’s feet dropped and he stood up. He reached for a second coffee and handed it to her with that crooked smile that now pulled at her heartstrings. “I was just going to say that I got you a coffee.”

“Thanks.” Hollis accepted the cup and wished like hell she could read him better. Was last night a huge mistake? Just another notch on his belt? Did it mean anything at all to him? Did she even care what he thought?

Yes. Dammit, she cared so much. It would be so much easier if she didn’t, but he had swooped in and charmed her.
