Jim agreed to do some digging into Cliff Craven’s days as a councillor. ‘I’ve an uncle used to work for the council,’ he said. ‘He’s nearly eighty now but sharp as a tack. I’ll see what he remembers.’

She thanked him and went to find Chris.

‘I’ve found your nursing home,’ he said, beaming with pride.

‘All by yourself, too.’

‘Count yourself lucky you’re not partnered with Fife’s Top Scorer.’

‘Don’t remind me. We have to get rid of him, Chris. He’s driving me mad.’

Sara appeared with a large evidence bag. ‘Got the mother’s journal,’ she said. ‘And I saw the pottery cat she bought. I’ve taken a photo of it and the receipt so I’ll check it with Retworth’s.’

‘Thanks Sara.’ She nodded to Chris. ‘Are we okay to visit… what’s her name?’

‘The mother’s friend? Caroline Wells. And, yeah. We can go over anytime. They said to avoid mealtimes, though.’

She glanced at the clock. Two twenty. ‘Come on, then. Let’s see what she remembers about Hazel’s mother.’
