He was in her parking lot, leaning indolently against an unobtrusive looking metallic gray car, his hands folded over his muscled chest. She could not help that her heart turned over inside her chest as she pulled up alongside his vehicle. He was wearing a thin gold and white sweater over faded jeans; his jacket opened all the way down. His black hair was tousled by the stiff October breeze.

She got out of the car and approached him slowly. The parking lot was deserted at that time, which she was happy about; Brent Hathaway was a very visible presence and would be recognized by almost anyone.

“Hey.” she murmured as she stood in front of him.

“Hey.” his gray eyes wandered over her face and settled on the clinging gray sweater she was wearing over her black denims. Her hair was caught up in an untidy bun at the top of her head as if she had not bothered to do anything with it. Tendrils of thick dark hair drifted along her face. She was not wearing makeup, but of course she did not need any. “How is your dad?”

“He is his usual rambunctious self. How is your family?”

“They are okay. Maddy has a recital later today.”

“A dance recital?”

“Yes.” He forced himself not to touch her for the moment. “She is into art for now. That girl changes her career path the way some people change their clothes.”

“You aren’t going?”

“I have been to too many to count and have been bored out of my skull. I have decided not to put myself through that again.” This time he reached out and pulled her into his arms. “Our first fight and we are doing the making up.”

“We did not have a fight,” She curled her fingers into his sweater and felt the steady beating of his heart. “You were a little pissed off because of what I said, and you went away to sulk.”

“I don’t sulk,” he tilted her chin up. “Men don’t sulk and in case you forget, I am a man.” He pulled her closer to him to attest to that.

Sophia almost moaned at the evidence of his erection against her. “Oh, I am very aware of

that.” she told him airily. “But you were sulking.”

“Are we going to debate that or go into your apartment?”

“We could debate it.” she said with a slight grin.

“I am going to take the high road and suggest that we table the debate on the grounds that I want to sink myself deep inside you.”

“That can work,” Her breath was thready and she had to breathe in deep.

“Good.” He bent to kiss her lips slowly, heating her body even more. Dragging his lips from hers, he took a deep breath himself and put her away from him. “We should go now.”

“You sent me a two thousand dollar dress.” Sophia said as soon as he answered the phone.

“Did it fit?”

“And you knew that I wear a size two.”

“Educated guess. Do you like it?”

“This could feed a family of four for months.
