"I hope you don't plan on spending the entire weekend studying." Marley stood in front of her bed, a hair dryer in one hand and a toiletry bag in the other, staring down at her roommate. Kim was lying on her stomach on her own matching bed, her chemistry textbook opened in front of her, notes, pens and highlighters cluttering her comforter.

She pulled off her glasses, and looked up at Marley. "I have a midterm on Monday. I need to study."

Her roommate frowned before turning to shove her stuff in the duffle bag on her unmade bed. "Fine, but you don't have to spend every waking minute holed up in our room."

"We don't all have boyfriends to whisk us off to the mountains every other weekend."

Marley smiled as she walked over to her dresser, pulling open one of the drawers and digging through the contents, making her box of jewelry jangle on top of the dresser. "It's true, I lead a charmed life. But just because I go out and have fun doesn't mean you get a free pass to become a hobbit."

"I think you mean hermit."

"Whatever." Marley returned to the bed and put her underwear and socks in her bag. "I just want to get out of here before they put the whole dorm on lock down," she said, zipping the bag shut.

"What are you talking about?"

Marley stop and looked at her roommate. "You didn't hear?"

Kim shook her head, so Marley pushed some books out of the way and perched on the edge of her bed, excited to share a bit of gossip.

"Kaycee Michaels—" She paused, waiting to see if the name would trigger anything. When Kim nodded, she continued: "She was supposed to go to some frat party last night, but she never showed up. Her roommate came back looking for her, but she wasn't in her room even though her cell phone was still on her bed. She was in the hall, about to leave and go back to the party, when she heard a scream come from the bathroom. She rushed in and found Kaycee, on the floor of one of the stalls moaning. There was blood and some weird green stuff smeared everywhere."

"What?" Kim sat up, her eyes wide.

"I know. It's weird. The roommate screamed, thinking she was dying, and the RA on duty—" Marley snapped her fingers, trying to remember the name. "Mark! Mark ran in and then called campus security. They hauled her off to the hospital and no one has heard anything since. Mark said it looked like she'd birthed some alien creature." Marley scrunched up her face, then stuck out the tip of her tongue and shook her head in disgust. "Ugh."

"Well, is she alive?"

Marley shrugged and hopped off the bed, grabbing her phone off her bedside table as her bracelets jingled on her wrists. She sighed. "Ben hasn't texted me yet. He was supposed to be here five minutes ago. I hope he's not just sitting down there waiting.
