There were very few things I hated about my job but the inability to punch assholes who needed it was at the top of my exceptionally short list. I snarled as much in the direction of Officer Laegon, the were-leopard who was now running Kit’s case.

“Same,” he grumbled, swinging his office door shut behind us. Taking two steps into the small room, he tossed the file folder he carried onto the orderly surface of his desk. Sighing, he flopped into his chair and turned his head to frown at me. “Normally, I’d say ‘give them a night in the lockup’—that’s enough to get a lot of people talking.” He shook his head. “I don’t think that’s gonna get us anywhere with these two, though. They’re clammed up tight.”

I stalked back and forth across the room, fuming. My inner bear was ready to start swiping claws through flesh to get answers, and it took no small amount of effort to resist that urge.

“They’re not in it for themselves.” I was thinking out loud, but Laegon nodded.

“Lawyers are too expensive.”

“What?” I shot him a questioning look.

“Their lawyers.” He tapped his chest. “You see those ties? Those are expensive ties. There’s no way dirtbags like those two have money for lawyers wearing ties that pricey.” Grabbing a pencil, he tapped it on his desk as he thought.

“So they’re hired hands, then,” I followed the line of supposition. “Lackeys. For someone with money.”

“Someone with a lot of money,” he corrected. “Which might explain why no one’s looking for her.”

“Families with money cover up their problems,” I agreed. “Burn dirty laundry rather than air it.”

“Doesn’t bode well for her.”

“No. It doesn’t.” Grim resolve settled in my chest. “I need to go check on her.”

“Sounds good.” Laegon pushed himself to his feet with a sigh. “I’ll walk you to the door. I’m gonna grab some coffee and see what else I can find to push this forward tonight. Call me in the morning, and we’ll see if anything’s changed.”
