CHAPTER ELEVEN
________
KENT
This prison is far worse than the one in the Carnal Court, because it’s a lie. Every inch of it is dripping with finery. It looks the way the Carnal court feels. But everything is its opposite. The bed and cushions which draw you in are scratchy and uncomfortable. The carpet that looks plush is hard enough to make your feet ache. There is no comfort here—not even common necessities are without their twisted irritations.
It’s a gilded torture cage. I don’t know if it’s what their normal prison is like, or if it’s just for me. But either way, every minute feels like an hour and I can’t erase Kari’s face from my mind. She looked broken, pulling against Verys’s arms to get to me. And it was everything that I could do not to fight to get back to her too. The magic that fae bound me with burned. My skin is still red and bubbled in the aftermath.
I was worried that they wouldn’t take it off once I got here. The fae that took me through the portal was not kind. The charm was only a show for the ones I left behind. As soon as the portal closed he threw me to the ground. I couldn’t stop myself because of the magic, and I couldn’t defend himself either. That smile stayed on his face while he kicked me.
When he dragged me into this cell and dropped me on the floor hard enough to bruise, his eyes were dancing with delight. “I’m not allowed to toy with your mind, human. Yet. But as soon as you are found guilty I’ll enjoy making you beg me to skin you alive.”
“Who are you?”
He only smiled wider and released the magic binding me. “Someone you’ll see again soon.”
That was hours ago. Maybe a day. There is no sense of time here. I’m completely alone and the light hasn’t changed once. Exhaustion is tugging at my brain, and I want to sleep. Aeric warned me that I might need my strength, and I agree. But I feel in my gut that they’re watching, and the second that I close my eyes that they’ll be on me. I deserve the enemies I left here, and I wouldn’t expect their forgiveness. That doesn’t mean I’m going to blindly take their punishment either.
I can stay awake a long time, but not forever. And I’ll be even less able to defend myself. Finding the least uncomfortable place in the room, I lean against one of the walls and close my eyes. here I can doze and not be snuck up on. Unless they can come through the actual walls. At this point I wouldn’t be surprised.
Sleep comes faster than I imagined possible, and so do the dreams. Walking home from my summer internship and finding my living room full of blood and gore. The horror of seeing the bodies that still had smiles on their faces even though they were missing limbs and were twisted all to hell.
