Heading back in the taxi, Carver was ready to talk about where their meeting with Samorn left them, what Megan had made of her, how they should go about navigating the next stage, should Aranya show interest in meeting the adventurous ‘Kerry and Simon’. As it happened, ‘George’ - as he introduced himself the moment they settled in the back of his comfortable, white Mercedes - had other ideas.

After Megan gave him the address and he made the alarming U-turn that almost threw Megan into Carver’s lap as he hung on the grab-handle, the interrogation began.

‘And what have you two beautiful people been up to this evening?’

‘So what do you think of Cyprus?’

‘Is this your first visit?’

‘Have you found ‘Muse’ yet?

While Carver judged ‘George’’s jolly chattiness more gratuity-related than genuine, Megan appeared to have no such qualms, responding to his questions in keeping with ‘Kerry’s’ fun-loving persona.

‘Just finding our way around.’

‘We’re loving it.’

‘Not for me, but it is him.’

‘Where’s ‘Muse’?’

When the questions started edging towards the personal - ‘Are you married?’ ‘Where are you from?’ ‘What sort of things do you like to do on holiday?’ - Carver started to wonder if their driver’s friendliness masked some hidden purpose. And when it veered towards creepy - ‘You are lucky my friend to enjoy the company of such a beautiful woman,’ and to Megan, ‘Don’t worry lovely lady, if he ever leaves you, George will look after you,’ - he signalled his unease by frowning into the mirror, where George’s gaze was as much on Megan as the road ahead. George must have got the message as the barrage slowed but didn’t dry up completely. Responding to Megan’s dig in his ribs, Carver turned to see her mouth, ‘Spoil sport.’ He spent the rest of the journey staring out at the dark, while Megan and George continued to engage in more idle conversation.

What the exchange did however, was confirm in Carver’s mind what he’d always suspected. That in the eyes of strangers who were none the wiser, he and Megan made a convincing ‘couple’. It reawakened a train of thought that was still there when they arrived home.

As Megan took George’s card, thanked him for his offer to pick them up, ‘Anywhere, anytime, special rate,’ and said goodbye, Carver made straight for the kitchen - and the Jameson. Entering behind and about to head upstairs to change, Megan called after him, ‘If you’re doing drinks, I’ll have Armagnac.’, Ten minutes later, nursing glasses and spread out on the opposing leather sofas that were uncomfortably warm during the day, they got round to discussing the night’s events. Carver voiced concern over whether Samorn was convinced by their ‘performance’. Megan thought she was.

‘What about contacting Aranya? Was she genuine about that do you think?’

‘I think so,’ Megan said. ‘When I first mentioned bdsm, while you were away, she got quite animated when I mentioned ‘Lola’s friend’ and she realised I was talking about Aranya. She seemed all for us getting together.’

When they talked about returning to Moonstone to see if Samorn had been in touch with Aranya, Megan was wary.
