LUCAS

PAST: SEVENTEEN YEARS OLD/SENIOR YEAR HIGH SCHOOL

“Start on the rope for a warmup, and then hit the weights. When you’re done with that, we’ll hook up, and get you some work in on the bag and in the ring.”

I nod at Mateo and walk over to the area that houses the jump ropes. Selecting one, I move away from the wall to give myself some space, and start jumping, warming up my muscles.

Now that we have a game plan for today, I want to get right to work. I’m ready to feel the burn of lactic acid in my body. I welcome it. I need the physical release.

I’m at Mateo’s boxing gym. Mateo is a friend of Jude’s, and he has this sick gym with weights and a boxing ring.

Apparently, he’s been working with Jude for a few years, and Jude is a badass fighter. As I found out firsthand when my temper got the best of me recently, and I squared off against him in the ring. I was able to land a cheap shot when he was distracted, but once his focus was on me, I was unable to hit him again.

That pissed me off. I left in a rage, but mostly with my tail between my legs. He straight up embarrassed me. Made me look weak. I don’t like feeling weak.

I’ve been coming to the gym some on the weekends to blow off steam. I’m usually here with Mason, but today I came alone. I need to clear my head.

The weekends are the only time I can make it during the fall season. I don’t have extra time during the week, plus, I’m usually too tired after an afternoon of football practice.

Things have been tense at home, to say the least. Mom is angry and hurt. Dad is on lock down, and we’re all trying to shield Eve from the drama.

I try to spend as little time as possible there. It’s all too much. What was once a haven for me, has now become a nightmare.

I wonder if this is how Grace always felt when she had drama with her mom.

The football season is going well. We’re making a run in the playoffs, winning every week so far to keep our season going. Our goal remains the same. To be state champions.

I’m trying to put my personal vendetta against Jude aside for the sake of the team. Just because I don’t like the guy, doesn’t mean I don’t realize he’s an asset to the team. I just don’t appreciate the way he’s come into my school, and stolen some of my thunder. Especially where Sophie’s concerned.

She’s been acting weird for a while now. Distant. Not as affectionate. And don’t think I haven’t noticed the way she looks at Jude. Or the way he looks at her, when he doesn’t know I’m watching. He’s threatening what is mine, and I don’t like it.

Homecoming night was a disaster. Sophie was pissed, the maddest I’ve ever seen her in the time we’ve been dating.
