“THIS PLACE LOOKS AMAZING!” Elspeth praises as she looks around. We walk around the edge of The Cliffs as she takes pictures with her phone promising to put them on Facebook, Instagram, and whatever other social media platforms there are now.

Grace had to go into town for a few hours and asked me to give Elspeth the grand tour. Surprisingly, I didn’t balk at the idea. It’s a beautiful day even though it’s windy out.

We stop next to the massive willow tree just at the edge of the property. Elspeth snaps a photograph of it and spins around. Her platinum blonde hair whips in the wind with the movement. She flashes me a smile and her green eyes morph into ovals when she looks back toward the house. “This will really be something.” Her Scottish accent is subtle, smooth.

“You think so?” I ask, still feeling skeptical.

“Yes, I think Grace will have this place looking amazing in no time. It’s an incredible location and the views from here are fantastic.”

Wrapping myself deeper into my sweater, I turn away from the wind.

Elspeth stares at her phone as she flicks through the photographs. “It was so nice to see Grace the other day. I couldn’t believe she’d come back here.”

“Oh. Did you two grow up together?”

Elspeth shakes her head. “We weren’t close when we were younger or anything like that but my father knew her father sort of thing. My father has since passed away but Grace’s parents are still going strong. That Bruce Mackenzie.” She tsks. “They don’t make men like that anymore. I could swear he’s bionic.” She laughs.

I force a smile and take a second to look at Elspeth. She’s far different from her husband who helps to run his family farm, works at the boathouse, and spends the rest of his days doing construction. And she’s quite the opposite of Grace.

Elspeth’s face is caked in makeup and her nails are overlaid with acrylic. Her five-inch stiletto boots sink in the grass and mud with every step we take and a Louis Vuitton purse is slung over her shoulder. She’s prissy, like some beach babe bimbo who’s been dropped in the wrong country.

“I’m glad I’ll now finally have a job,” she says, pouting her blood-red painted lips. “Aidan says I spend too much money not to have one.”

I laugh uncomfortably.

“I always imagined myself going to fashion school. Not being stuck here.” She makes a face. “But Aidan loves this place. He’s never leaving.” She stares at the ground for a moment. “Where are you from?”

I encourage her with a wave to walk a bit more as we head back to the inn. “Ah, Riyadh actually?”

“Riyadh.” She searches her brain and I roll my eyes.

“I was born in Riyadh but I grew up in New York City?”

Elspeth is still attempting to figure out where on the geographical map Riyadh is.

“Saudi Arabia,” I say, helping her out.

Jack barks in the distance as he runs and barrels through the chickens that are in a cluster causing them to scatter.
