MY BARE FEET are propped up on the railing as I watch the surf in the distance. The clouds have dissipated, and the sky is a clear blue. I got back from New York yesterday and have received a dozen messages from my publicist. Sheâs pissed about the talk show fiasco, which is what she refers to it as, not me. On the other hand, the publishing company has reported an increase in sales. Iâve been told that Iâm not going to be doing any talk shows in the near future, but my book sales are up.
I call that a win-win.
The doorbell rings and Iâm not expecting anyone, so I go to the door cautiously. When I peep through the hole, I see Amber standing on the other side of the door. Itâs never a good sign when she just shows up. This is twice in a matter of a few weeks.
When I open the door, Amber looks me up and down.
âPut a fucking shirt on,â she huffs, brushing past me. Her hair is down in subtle waves that flow over her shoulders. She is wearing heels with shorts that go mid-thigh and a billowy blouse.
I grab a random shirt off the back of the couch and slip it over my head.
âAfraid you canât control yourself?â I joke with her.
âYou wish, pig,â Amber laughs.
There was a time when we couldnât stand to be in the same room with each other unless it was between the sheets. Amber still has an attitude and I still irritate the fuck out of her. I guess some things never really change.
âYou must miss me because you keep popping by,â I say arrogantly.
âYou never answer your phone,â Amber sighs. âDo you even know how to use it?â Her voice is laced with annoyance.
âI know how to use it,â I say as I raise my eyebrows, and Iâm met with a pair of narrowed blue eyes.
âSo, you just avoid my calls, then?â She shakes her head. âIf you donât like me âpopping byâ, then next time youâll answer,â she counters.
âNoted,â I reply.
âBy the way, nice stunt on that talk show,â she smirks.
âI didnât even use a stunt double,â I answer with a smile.
I cross my arms and lean against the kitchen island. âTo what do I owe the pleasure of this unannounced visit, again?â I emphasize the last word.
Amber looks around the house that she once occupied. Itâs clean, but only because I havenât been here much.
âIâm not interrupting anything, am I?â She squints one of her blue eyes at me.
âIâm alone.â
âWell, you shouldnât be.â Amber drops her purse on the coffee table.
I laugh.
âYouâve been talking to Wade,â I groan, grabbing a glass from the kitchen cabinet and filling it with water.
âDonât you think itâs been long enough?â Her expression is gentle. She knows me.
I sigh and take a deep breath.
âSo now youâre trying to get me laid?â I cock an eyebrow at her.
âI have no doubt you can get laid on your own,â Amber eyes me wearily.
