Chapter Seventeen

Dontell

The night air was cold, one of the coldest night St. Louis had seen this autumn season. The crescent moon was high, hovering over the Arch in the distance, its light reflecting off the river behind Oasis. The air was calm, almost haunting.

It was a perfect fucking night for a race.

“Ladies and gentleman,” Shayla called out, getting the crowd around our cars to quiet down. “This is the first race of the night, and it’s starting it off with a bang!”

The crowd roared, and Jer’s eyes met mine. He was standing a few feet from Shayla, looking pissed off. I couldn’t blame him. Leon and Cain were racing; I was joining for the fuck of it. I planned on joining every single race tonight, channeling my frustration into my Nissan GTR R35. I rarely brought her out on race nights, but tonight was different.

Tonight, I needed the distraction. After two days of torturing myself with intense work outs, checking the security cameras to watch Mina and Cleo, wishing I was there with them, and helping Cain build a new engine for a buyer in Germany, I just needed to fucking race.

I needed to control something powerful. I needed to see the city I called home pass me by in a blur as I pressed harder on the gas. I needed to hear the roar of my engine and nothing else, drowning out all thoughts of her.

If I didn’t have it, I would end up back at my house, claiming someone I shouldn’t, as mine.

“Purple, huh?”

Slowly, I twisted my neck to find a man staring at me, a cigarette hanging from his lips as he leaned against his lime-green Mitsubishi Evolution IX. He was one of the six racers on the line-up, a cocky little shit. I’d seen over the last few weeks, the rumor being that he came here looking to race Leon.

Unfortunately for him, he wasn’t just getting Leon.

He was getting me and Cain, too. I was humble enough to know I would never be able to beat Leon, but I was confident enough to know that this man’s car would be mine by the end of the night. I would beat him in this race, bruise his fragile ego, and then he would race me again—for pink slips.

That Evo was mine.

A slow, wide smile spread across my face. “Color of royalty, my guy.”

Shayla’s voice grabbed my attention. “Now, you newbies on the line-up,” she began, a wicked smirk on her face, “I hope you know you have two Founders racing tonight.”

The crowd roared again and the driver on the other end of the line grunted. “Can we get the pep talk over with? I have a race to win.”

Shayla’s eyes snapped to him, glaring as the music from inside of the building thumped around us. “This is a twenty thousand dollar buy in, little boy. You got that?”

“Twenty Gs?” the third newbie shouted in disbelief.

Leon and I shared a look as Cain pushed off his hood, his hands in his jean pockets as he walked up to the whiner.
