Chapter Six

The sunlight streaming in through the living room window awoke Ray the following morning. He raised his head from the sofa cushion and glanced around the room through bleary eyes. What time was it? And where the hell was Eric?

His limbs ached as he pushed himself up into a sitting position and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee slowly worked its way into his senses.

“You look like hell,” an amused voice noted from the kitchen door.

Ray quirked a brow as he watched Eric approach with two mugs of coffee. “I don’t usually sleep facedown on the sofa.”

“Well, at least you slept.” Eric handed him a mug and cracked a grin. “That counts for something, right?”

“Right.” It was the first time since he’d returned from Iraq that he’d slept through the night. And remembering how he’d confided in Eric the previous night, he became aware of the lightness in his chest. It was as if sharing what happened in the war with Eric had melted away the heaviness he’d been feeling for so long. He hadn’t believed he’d ever be able to say it out loud, to admit he might be the reason for the deaths of his men, but telling Eric had felt surprisingly easy, almost natural. And Eric’s lack of judgment, the care in his blue eyes had somehow soothed his pain. He’d never get past the guilt, but knowing Eric didn’t think less of him was more than he could ask for.

Shifting on the sofa to make room for Eric, he watched him fold his long body onto the cushions. “You sleep okay?”

“Like a baby.” Eric’s expression turned sheepish as he placed his mug on the coffee table. “After you passed out, I crashed on your bed.” He pointed to the pair of sweats he was wearing. “Took these from your closet.”

Ray chuckled, admiring the way the material hung around Eric’s muscular thighs.

“They look good on you.” As a matter of fact, with his sleep-ruffled hair and bare chest, Eric was one hell of a tempting sight. “You hungry? I could make some bacon and eggs.”

“Wish I could but I gotta go.”

“You do?”

“Yeah. Promised Ethan I’d help him out with his car.”

Ray frowned. He hadn’t heard that name before. “Who’s Ethan?”

“He lives with me.” Eric shot him a look of surprise. “I never mentioned him before?”

“No, you didn’t.” Trying to ignore the prickle of jealousy itching his skin, Ray asked, “How long have you lived together?”

“About a year,” Eric said casually. “He works in my office.” A pause, and he added,

“I figured you knew. I thought your mom probably gave you the number when you got back and she knows I moved in with someone.”

The mention of his mother caught Ray off guard. “Did you see Mom while I was gone?”

Eric suddenly appeared uncomfortable. He rested his elbows on his knees and clasped his hands together. “Uh, sure. She missed you. I guess seeing me made her feel a little closer to you.”

Ray nodded as a tightness closed his throat.
