BREAKING THE PATTERN ONCE AND FOR ALL

Not long ago we had the bushes trimmed in front of our home. Some of them were overgrown and really looked bad, so we had a man come and trim them back to stumps. We thought the man who trimmed the bushes would pick up the trimmings and haul them to the dump. However, he left them and didn’t come back. So we called and left messages on his answering machine. Finally, he came back with his truck, and I thought, Good, the problem is solved. However, he didn’t put the limbs and rubbish in his truck; he bound them into bundles and placed them by the curb. He said, “The trash men will pick them up.” There were five or six large bundles over six feet high. I thought, The trash haulers will take one look at all this and say, “Forget that!”

The next morning was our day for trash pick-up, so when I left my home for work I prayed, “Lord, surround my trash with favor.” When I returned home, I was so relieved to see all those bundles gone. I thought, Thank You, Lord! Then the Lord spoke to me and said, Marilyn, the garbage in a person’s life can’t be surrounded with favor; neither can I be expected to carry it off. I can’t give favor to garbage or cover it over. The way to get rid of trash is by repenting of it. Then the blood of Jesus cleanses, and past sins are cast into the sea of forgetfulness.

God wants you to get rid of the trash in your life. He will not overlook it or give it favor. He wants you to take the steps necessary to deal with family iniquities in your life.

ACKNOWLEDGE AND CONFESS THE INIQUITIES OF YOUR FOREFATHERS

In chapter 4 you uncovered the roots of the iniquities in your family tree. You asked yourself, “What sins, habits, failures, or illnesses do I know of in the lives of my forefathers?” You dealt with each person in your last four or five generations individually, starting with your father and mother.

Now put your list of family iniquities before the Lord and get His cleansing. The blood of Jesus will cleanse your bloodline, and God will release His power to deliver your family tree from generational iniquities.

FORGIVE YOUR FAMILY INIQUITIES

You may not feel very forgiving toward your forefathers because their iniquities have caused you such problems. You must guard against the “victim” attitude, however. You aren’t a victim in Christ Jesus; you’re a victor. Your forefathers may have passed along to you a weakness for the enemy to use against you, but you make the choice to act on it or break it. To break the cycle of iniquity for yourself and the next generation, you must forgive your forefathers:

Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

Matthew 6:12,14 NIV

Many people have been terribly hurt by their parents or other family members.
