Chapter 19

Trent’s face was pale and grim by the end of her story.

‘And the police arrested him?’ he asked.

She nodded. ‘I gave them a statement, and they charged him. He assaulted a couple of officers when they arrested him, and he couldn’t provide them with a suitable bail address so last I heard he was behind bars until sentencing but I’ve been out of the loop since I started at Gleneagle.’

‘That’s really brave of you. I heard that a lot of women can’t go through with the charges.’

‘My mum was in one toxic violent relationship after another. I used to think she just let those men do it to her. I know now it wasn’t her fault, but I wish she’d reached out for help and found a better life, maybe one that could’ve included me.’

‘I don’t get how he’s allowed to still call you.’

She winced. ‘They put a domestic violence order in place with the condition that he’s not to have contact with me unless I give him permission. I haven’t reported it because I haven’t actually answered any of his calls. I don’t want to be the girl who cried wolf.’

Trent reached out and placed a hand on her shoulder to stop her from walking any further. He slipped his arms around her waist and pulled her against him. She tentatively placed her hands on his chest. God, it felt good to be in his arms again. They were stopped in the middle of the boardwalk but neither of them took any notice of the other walkers skirting around them.

‘I still want that second chance,’ he told her, his eyes shining with genuine sincerity. ‘I can’t guarantee we’re never going to disagree, but I can promise I will never put my hands on you in anger.’

Tears pricked at her eyes.

‘I promise to try and tell you what’s going on for me, even if it’s hard,’ she replied. She’d let them both down by not trusting him with the information sooner.

‘I’d appreciate that.’ He smiled her favourite grin.

‘Just know it might not always come out right,’ she warned him smiling back.

Trent lowered his head to hers but just before their lips touched, he paused. ‘Just don’t shut me out.’

‘I won’t,’ she murmured, gripping his shirt tightly in her fingers as she pressed her lips to his.

‘He’s cute!’ Gran said nudging Georgia with her elbow. They were standing side by side in the kitchen, finishing off the roast Edith had put in for dinner while Georgia and Trent were out. Trent was in the shower, so Gran seemed to be getting in a hurried conversation with her.

Georgia just gave her a wide smile. ‘I finally told him about Alex.’

‘Good! No use keeping secrets.’ She turned the oven off.

Georgia lifted the tray out, placing it on the wooden chopping board. ‘Smells so good, Gran!’

‘Got to feed up that man of yours.’ She chuckled. ‘What’d he say about what Alex did to you?’

‘He said he couldn’t promise we wouldn’t argue but he’d never lay a hand on me in anger.
