“I just got a text from Simon. He’s in Colorado.”

Darren Carter stood in Billy’s doorway and shook his head in dismay. He had driven out to the river with the bad news — Simon had gone home and probably wasn’t coming back. It wasn’t totally unexpected, at least by Carter.

The coach had been distressed by their workouts since the accident. Simon’s heart wasn’t into tennis, and no amount of cajoling was going to change that. The whole plan — and Simon’s career — was in danger of blowing up.

“If I had to guess, I’d say he won’t be going to Australia either,” Carter said. “I don’t know what you can do about any of this, but you’re his agent and I just wanted to let you know before I leave. I’m planning to fly back to Florida this afternoon. I believe I’ve done all I can here.”

Billy was thinking the same thing, at least for the moment. “Come in,” he said. “Let me call Zander.”

They sat down at the kitchen table, and Billy put the call on speaker as it rang. As far as he knew, Zander was working in Florida and probably busy. But this couldn’t wait.

“I’m guessing you’ve already heard that Simon left Knoxville,” Billy said.

“I just talked to Michael. He’s not happy. He blames you.”

“Blames me for what?”

“For letting Simon take your car out and wreck it, I guess. He thinks you should have known better.”

“Well, he’s not wrong about that. But we can’t undo the damage now. The question is whether Simon is just going to cut and run; looks like he already has. I have to admit, I’m thinking the same thing at this point.”

“That you’re out as his agent?”

There was a long silence. “Darren is sitting here with me,” Billy said. “Simon texted him this morning.”

“Did Darren talk to him?”

“No, but he got the idea that Simon isn’t coming back. Darren is planning to go back to Florida today. He’s on speaker with you now.”

“Darren, will you wait until you hear from me before you do anything?” Zander asked. “If we all bail at once, this thing is over. And I’m afraid we’ll all regret it. Let me talk to Simon, for his sake, before you leave there. You’re still on retainer.”

“Zander, this isn’t about money,” Carter said. “You know my thoughts on Simon. I like coaching him — he’s a spectacular talent, and I like his spirit. You go along for weeks, and everything is great. You think you’re getting through. You can see his potential — it’s unlimited. And then … balls up.”

“With all due respect to Holly and her pain, a car accident where nobody is seriously injured shouldn’t derail the kid’s playing career. I mean, he’s climbed into the top hundred in the world rankings. And he’s just nineteen. A few years down the road, this will all be a distant memory. At least, it should be.”

“I agree with that, but I’ve seen a lot of promising careers go in the dunny for no good reason,” Carter said.
