Chapter 9
“WHERE DO YOU THINK we should start?” Dee asked after breakfast.
“I’m not sure,” I said, wiping the last plate. “I say we call Darlene’s office and see what this Davis guy was up to. See if he was in town. It wouldn’t surprise me a bit to learn that he came down here to lean on her, she decided to tell him where to go, and he choked her to death. I mean, seriously, after being in a room with her ghost for five minutes, I was considering exorcism. It’s not like she doesn’t inspire murder.”
“In a way, I feel kinda sorry for her,” Dee said, picking at a string on the bottom of her shirt.
“Are you kidding me? She was a thief and a con artist.” Leave it to Dee to find it in her heart to summon sympathy for somebody who didn’t deserve one iota of it.
“Yeah, but think about it. Gabe would never have been attracted to a person that ugly inside. There must have been a turning point in her life that made her that way. She’s a beautiful woman, or I guess was a beautiful woman. What happened to turn her into what she became?”
“We all make choices, sweetie,” I said. “You and I haven’t exactly had things easy, but we haven’t turned bad. No, I think that apple was rotten at the core.”
“She’s right,” Maisey said, fading in. “I’ve seen many a man—and woman—have it tough but still make the right decisions, even when they weren’t the easy ones. We’ve all found money or had a chance to steal something we coveted, but made the choice to be a good person. Shoot, many’s the time I had a chance to steal when we had little to nothin’ to eat that night, but I didn’t. We either went hungry or we managed to trap something. Sometimes the only difference between a good person and a bad one is whether or not you give into temptation.”
“I suppose so,” Dee said, following me to the car. “I just can’t help but feel that there’s more to her than that.”
“When you think that, remember she was going to steal Gabe’s house,” I replied, my tone flat. I loved her for her heart, but sometimes I wanted to whack just a little bit of her empathy out of her.
“Now, how are we gonna handle this?” I asked.
“I’ve been thinking about that,” Dee said. “And as much as I hate to be the one to say it, I think we need to find out what the office scuttlebutt was about her. And the best way to do that is to talk to the people who see everything, but that nobody important ever looks twice at.”
I exchanged a grin with her. “The secretary!”
“Yeah,” she said, “but neither of us is good at getting people to talk.”
“No, but we know somebody who’s a pro. Linda. I swear, that woman lives to gossip, and she can pull a secret out of a mute man.
