CHAPTER 5

DAMN THE STARS! Morgan thought. The South Tower was the Royal Family’s personal living quarters. What in the hell was going on? He reached down and grabbed a handful of a pirate’s shirt to haul him up off the floor with one beefy hand. He slammed the prisoner against the stone wall and demanded, “What is your objective? Did you really believe you could get to the King?”

The pirate only replied with silence and a lop-sided smirk.

Morgan roughly shoved him into the arms of a nearby Knight and ordered, “Take the injured for medical treatment, and the rest to the brig. I want two Knights per prisoner at all times until we know what is going on here.” He slid his helmet back over his head as Kalle ordered a platoon of Knights to join them from the Security Tower. Within minutes they were marching on the double across the Palace, their armored boots vibrating the ground. He could only hope that they were not too late. The center spire of the Palace rose above them, a pinnacle of power jabbing up into the sky. The South Tower was just on the other side. As the column of soldiers ran around the last corner, Morgan skidded to a stop. Palace Patrol had established a barricade across the arched walkway crossing the expanse to the South Tower. A Lieutenant spotted Morgan’s bronze armor and hurried over. After a quick salute, the officer reported, “We have them contained inside the main door.”

Morgan frowned and asked, “They were coming out? Not trying to get in?”

“Yes, Sir, it looks that way. External security reported no contact, and they were at their post outside the main doors the entire time. As we were entering the tower to do a sweep, we met them trying to come out.”

Morgan pulled his helmet back and scratched the side of his face in confusion. “How in the hell did they get inside the tower in the first place? There’s something we’re missing here.” He shook his head. “That doesn’t matter right now. We’ll deal with that later. If this group is like the last one, they will not come out. We’re going to have to go in after them. Rally your guys. This annoyance has taken up too much of our time today already.”

He engaged his blasters, centering his focus with the familiar whine of his weapons charging up. But before he could issue the command to charge, a sleek high-speed shuttle roared overhead and dove past the elevated walkway. He rushed over to the side and watched the shuttle swoop into a fast landing on the South Tower’s private landing platform. The landing thrusters flared blindingly bright as the pilot brought the shuttle to an abrupt stop, blasting big ugly burn marks across the Royal Seal adorning the landing pad.

Morgan whipped around to Kalle and the Lieutenant. “The Royal Family? Has the Queen’s guard checked in recently? What about the Prince?” he demanded.

His Second shook her head slowly.
