Chapter 8

April 7, 1973

Through the glass of the truck’s windows, the sun finally felt warm as Patsy and her dad pulled into the town of Pine Ridge. They were looking for some supplies to fix the pump. Hank had looked like he might cry when Dad told him he had to stay home and finish cleaning the rabbit. Patsy felt a little sorry for him, but he was the one who’d shot the rabbit.

“So, what’s wrong with the pump?” Patsy asked.

“Turned out to be simple,” Dad said. “The wires going from the generator to the pump are inside a metal tube to protect them. Every time the pump turned on, they rubbed a little against the metal. After years of that, some of the insulation rubbed clean off.”

“You can fix it,” Patsy said. “I knew you could.”

Dad smiled. “If I can get a long enough length of wire. I brought some with me, but not enough. We’ll try the service station.”

A minute later, they parked in front of a gas station. A bell on the door jingled as they went in. Patsy noticed a little rack of postcards next to the cash register. She remembered her promise to Laura.

At the sound of the bell, a man about her dad’s age looked up from his stool behind the counter. A wide grin spread across his face.

“Is that Danny Antoine?” the man asked.

“Pete?” Dad said.

“That’s right, man,” the guy—Pete—said. “I haven’t seen you since your dad’s funeral.”

“It has been a while,” Dad said. “Your hair is longer. How long you been working here?”

“A couple years. It beats working on the road crew in the dead of winter.”
