CHAPTER 3

Alex’s return flight had been without incident. She arrived home to find Kaylee’s mom seated primly on one of the Victorian armchairs in the living room. Ryan was sprawled on the carpet, lost in an imaginary world as he played with his action figures.

“I’m home,” Alex announced.

Kaylee’s mom stood and looked on as Ryan squealed and greeted her with a hug around the waist.

“Hey, kiddo. How’s you? Did you do anything special while your mom and I were away?”

“Um, Grandma and I just stayed in.” He threw a sideways glance at his grandmother and added, “But she let me watch cartoons and play with my toys, so it’s okay.”

Alex turned to the older woman. “Thank you so much for taking care of him.”

Kaylee’s mother shrugged. “He is my grandson. What I don’t understand is how Kaylee can leave his care to her roommate. I’m sure you’re a busy woman and will find caring for someone else’s child a hassle. Maybe I should stay here until my daughter’s return on Wednesday.”

No fucking way, Alex thought. “Oh, no need. We’ll be fine. Really.”

Alex had never gone out of her way to please other people, and she wasn’t about to start now. But as she endured Gail Daniel’s critical gaze and the awkward silence, she wished she got along with the woman. For Kaylee’s sake and Ryan’s.

It hadn’t escaped her attention that Gail still refused to acknowledge Alex’s relationship with Kaylee. As far as Gail was concerned, Alex and Kaylee were sharing rent and that was it. Since she was truly grateful for the help but also wanted the older woman out of there, Alex let it go and repeated her thanks. Two minutes later, Gail kissed Ryan goodbye and went on her way.

Alex sank down on the sofa. More than six hours of sleep on the plane should’ve given her enough rest, but that hadn’t been the case. She was exhausted.

She consulted Ryan on dinner, settling for a half-pepperoni, half-Hawaiian pizza. Since she had no cooking skills to speak of, she didn’t feel too guilty about feeding Ryan junk food. She planned to order healthier takeout for the next two days. In the meantime, this would have to do.

They ate on the floor in front of the television and managed to keep the carpet stain-free.

“This is fun,” Ryan decided. “I don’t know why Mommy and Grandma don’t let me eat here.”

Alex quickly told him, “Promise me you won’t say a word to your mom about this, okay? Let’s keep it between us. Our little secret, alright?”

He thought for a moment then nodded. “Promise.”

Ryan even pinky-swore on it. The simple act of hooking their fingers together made Alex feel so much closer to him.

Soon, it was bath time. Alex had promised to let him stay in the water until his fingers turned pruney so she patiently waited, supervising the seemingly endless bath from the doorway.

Ryan was blowing at soap bubbles and sloshing water around the bathtub when he stopped suddenly and said, “Grandma says you’re bad for us.
