A Rock Star Five-Step Program:

The Other Seattle Bands

Nirvana gets all the credit, but the early 1990s grunge movement out of Seattle wasn’t a singular effort. There were several other important Seattle bands that helped to change the face of music.

Pearl Jam. There seemed to be a Nirvana/Pearl Jam rivalry in the early grunge days, but that has long since disappeared. Pearl Jam’s longevity and versatility has firmly established their place in rock history.

Alice in Chains. Probably the darkest of the Seattle bands, they were set back by the 2002 death of lead singer Layne Staley from a drug overdose.

Soundgarden. Chris Cornell and the band channeled classic rock as much as they waved the grunge flag.

Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl played drums in Nirvana, but he stepped to the front of Foo Fighters. Like Nirvana, Foo songs are rich in catchy hooks. Unlike Nirvana, life in the Foo Fighters seems much happier.

Temple of the Dog. Members of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam came together to honor Andrew Wood, a friend who had died of a heroin overdose. Wood was the leader of several influential bands in the area. The 1991 Temple of the Dog album only became legendary years later, when Soundgarden and Pearl Jam emerged as rock stars.
