BEAU

My palms are sweating as I approach Sugar Gravel to pick up Willow for our date. She lives in the apartment above the shop. I walk around the building to the back and up the iron steps to her door. Even though I already kissed her two nights ago in my truck at Peterson Pointe, this date tonight is twenty years coming. I've wanted to be with Willow so long. What if I've built her up so much in my head that this date is a disaster? I shake my head, trying to wipe away the nerves. The door suddenly swings open, making me jump back.

"I thought I'd heard someone come up the steps," Willow smiles. "But, there was no knock."

My gaze trails up and down, taking in every inch of the woman of my dreams. She’s wearing another sundress, white with bluebells printed all over them. It fits snugly against every curve of her soft body, the sight making me hard at once.

“You look gorgeous,” I blurt out, and she beams.

“You look amazing yourself.” She steps back, giving me room to come inside. “I’m almost ready. I just need one more minute.”

She disappears down a small hallway, leaving me in the tiny living room. I look around at the cozy space. Her apartment smells like sugar and cinnamon, probably from the desserts baked downstairs. Pictures are hanging on the wall in all different shapes and sizes. The images of Willow with her family remind me how much each of us has to lose. We are both so close to our families, and I can imagine neither one of them is eager for this date to turn into anything more.

I turn away and see our old yearbook sitting on the coffee table in front of the couch. I sit down and pick up the book. I flip through the pages, looking for Willow. I find her photo between Maggie Hansen and James Hudlow. It's a picture I know too well, having spent many hours of my youth staring at it. She looks a lot like she did back then, same great smile and dark red hair. I flip the pages to find my picture, wondering how much I've changed. When I get to the pages with all the students with the last name that starts with the letter M, I quickly find my picture. Someone, I can only assume Willow, has drawn a red heart around my smiling face.

It thrills me to know that Willow had feelings for me back then too. But just as soon as the happiness hits me, sadness hits me as well. How much time have we lost over the last twenty years because of some feud with our families?

“All set,” Willow says, walking into the living room, but freezes when she sees the yearbook in my hand.

I stand and turn the book around to show her my picture with the heart.

“You liked me back then?” I ask.

She bites her lip and looks down. “I had a little bit of a crush on you.
