​ Which is not to say that the honest fakes are not beautifully engineered. The Séance Room is the only scene in the attraction which has no aesthetic indulgences; it's nothing but special effects in a dark room. Yale's effects have nothing to compete with, here.

​ Riders may notice that smaller instruments basically just spin in circles while the large ones bob up and down; the larger floating objects are moved by a MAPO device known as a "Balloon Hoist". This is because it was invented for it’s a small world back in 1964 and used to bob the various flying contraptions which appear in that show.

​ The glass lamp which once hung above Leota - and the smaller lamp which floats above the "rap on a table" table today - is a slight anachronism, as the style was introduced by Louis C. Tiffany in 1895, and most of his lamps were electric, not gas, contraptions. It hardly matters, because the cut glass lamp above Leota, much like the candle which sat to her left for 35 years, served the sole purpose of adding additional specks of light reflected in the glass to distract from the inevitable reflection of the projector lamp.

​ Most riders, I'm afraid, don't have enough time to enjoy the intended full effect of the surprise that Madame Leota is in fact inside her crystal ball. Before she started flying, the staging of the scene was slightly clearer. The intent is made more obvious by the Ghost Host's deleted narration which sets us up for a medium with "has a remarkable head for materializing the disembodied . ”

​ At Disneyland, the ride designers went through the effort of designing a special chair in which a speaker could be hidden so that Leota’s incantations seem at first to come from the chair ; as we enter the Séance Room, we see the back of a chair pulled up to a table and are primed by the Ghost Host to expect to see Leota seated in the chair.

​ The second reveal, as the cars pivoted, was that the chair was empty, but for a few moments it was also not yet evident that Leota was inside the ball. The rear of Leota's head used to have a very simple lighting effect, much like a color wheel used to illuminate those midcentury tinsel Christmas trees, so that her hair appeared at first glance to be a swirling pattern of light inside the crystal ball. It was only about a third of the way through the scene that riders realized that she was a head inside the gazing ball.

​ Maybe the most beautifully simple but astonishingly complex effect inside the Haunted Mansion can only be seen briefly from near the exit of the room; it's a glowing green ball that leaves a faint trail behind it. This is not a projection effect. 55 It's a gigantic mechanism hidden behind a scrim, the front painted flat black to match the walls, leaving an oval shaped "screen" unpainted.
