CHAPTER 12

Amara

I go to bed thinking about Dante’s lips on mine. Our kiss. My very first one.

It was better than I expected. Yes, Dante was rough, but I felt the passion in it all over my body. When we pulled apart, I wanted to lean back in and kiss him again. The feel of his lips was truly wonderful.

But I’m glad I didn’t lean back in. Dante needs to know that he won't get all of me until he starts letting me in. A kiss might seem like the right step forward, but in this case, it’s not. Dante might be able to separate sex from emotion, but I don’t think I can. How can I have my first time with a man and not feel anything for him? Especially when that man is my husband, the one I’m sworn to for the rest of my life.

I manage to fall asleep, even though my thoughts are racing all over.

I just hope tomorrow that things between Dante and me become better. If I don’t cling to that, then I don’t really have anything.

I’m woken up by Giana bringing me breakfast in bed.

“Good morning,” she says brightly. At least one of us is happy, I think.

“Morning,” I say groggily, sitting up in bed. She places a tray filled with food on my lap.

“I hope you enjoy,” she says before turning to leave me alone.

“Giana,” I call. She smiles as she looks back at me. “Have you seen my husband this morning?”

She nods. “Yes. He actually left to go get some business done.”

My heart deflates. “So, he’s not here?”

She offers a pitying look. “No, I’m afraid not.”

“That’s all right. I was just wondering.” I take a bite of my food. “It’s good.”

“I’ll leave you to it,” she says, walking out of the room and shutting the door behind her.

I eat my food in silence. I can’t expect Dante always to be home. Of course, he has work to attend to. I know he’s dealing with Mr. Bianchi, his rival, even though he won't tell me why he hates the man so much or why Bianchi is after him in the first place. He said it was personal. I can’t help but wonder if Bianchi is tied to Dante’s scars.

But hearing that he’s away on business makes the pang in my heart grow. I never thought I’d miss him. Or maybe I miss the chance for us to progress our relationship. Either way, I’m sad he’s not here.

All the hope I felt this morning feels like it’s been washed away.

After eating breakfast, I wander downstairs and into the garden, finding peace with the flowers around me as usual. I smell the roses, a sweet and simple scent. The sight of them makes me miss my garden at home, which makes me miss my father and even my sisters. I wonder how they’re doing. I desperately want to call my dad and tell him I’m all right, even though I was almost kidnapped last night. But I can’t even do that.
