Chapter Ten

Devin and Tia parked their bikes just outside of the garage. They would be leaving again in a couple hours and there was no threat of rain. Devin walked over to Tia, and took her hand when they began to walk toward Kaitlin’s home.

“Are you ready for this?”

“No, but I agree Kaitlin needs to know what is going on. I can’t bear the thought of lying to her. She has been too good to me to be treated like that.”

“I understand, and agree completely,” Devin told her.

Lucia was having lunch with Kaitlin when they heard the rumble of the approaching bikes. Kaitlin looked up when Devin and Tia arrived and parked by the garage.

“I wonder what those two are up to now,” she said to Lucia.

“I have no idea, but it looks like we are about to find out,” Lucia answered when Tia and Devin stepped onto the porch.

“Come on in,” Kaitlin hollered, when Devin lifted her hand to knock.

Devin took a deep breath and opened the door, holding it to allow Tia to step through first.

“Hey, ladies,” Kaitlin said.

“Hi, Kaitlin, and you too, Lucia.” Tia slipped in beside Kaitlin.

“Have you two had lunch?” she asked.

“Yes thanks, Kaitlin,” Devin answered. “Do you have some time to talk?” She took a seat next to Lucia.

“Yes I do,” Kaitlin answered, a worried frown on her face.

“I guess that’s my cue to move on,” Lucia replied, and started to stand.

Devin moved her hand to Lucia’s arm. “You might as well stay.”

Lucia looked at her friend and nodded.

“It’s time for us to be honest with Kaitlin.”

“Honest about what?” Kaitlin asked with a tremble in her voice.

“Of who, and what we are,” Devin replied. “You deserve to know what we’re involved in.”

Tia wriggled under Kaitlin’s gaze. “I think we all need a drink,” she said, and grabbed a bottle of Jack and four glasses to bring to the table.

Devin watched her pour and then began speaking to Kaitlin. “What we are going to tell you may be very shocking to you, but I think I can speak for all three of us when I tell you we love you and appreciate all you have done for us.”

Kaitlin’s hand went to her chest. “You all should know I love you too, but you’re beginning to scare me, Devin. Is there something wrong?”

“Yes, something is very wrong, but I must tell you other things first. You need to know who and what we are.”

“Are you secret government agents or something?” Kaitlin guessed.

Devin couldn’t resist a chuckle. “No, we aren’t spooks.” She reached across the table to place a comforting hand on Kaitlin’s arm. “Do you believe in supernatural beings?”

“Like ghosts or the devil?” Kaitlin asked.

“No, more like witches, vampires, and werewolves,” Devin answered.

Kaitlin’s face drained of color when Devin’s words sank in to her consciousness. “This is New Orleans, and it does have a history of voodoo and witchery.” She attempted to be lighthearted.

“But, do you believe?”

“Honestly, I have never given it much thought. What are you trying to tell me?”

Devin took a deep breath and let it out slowly.
