CHAPTER NINE

‘WHAT do you mean—his mistress?’ Willow demanded.

Jessica stared down at the cereal which was growing soggy in the bowl of milk and stirred at it uninterestedly with her spoon. She shouldn’t have said anything to her housemate. Why had she opened her big mouth and confided Salvatore’s shockingly erotic proposition? Because you had to tell someone or you’d go crazy and burst!

‘Oh, it’s a kind of arrangement that men make with women all the time,’ she said, shrugging her shoulders in an airy manner, as if she were used to dealing with such concepts every day of the week.

‘You mean it allows him to behave exactly as he wants to behave without having any responsibilities towards the woman!’ flared Willow. ‘Why the hell did you agree to it, Jessica? I take it you did agree to it?’

‘I guess I did,’ she said slowly.

‘But why? Are you out of your mind?’

‘Because…because…’ Jessica bit her lip. Because she adored him. Because a camaraderie had built up between them since she’d been working for him and that had contributed towards the way she had seized on this opportunity.

‘Because what?’ prompted Willow.

Jessica pushed the untouched cereal away and stared at her housemate, her blonde hair tumbling all over her shoulders, her porcelain skin flawless without a scrap of make-up. She wondered whether Willow was just being naïve, or mischievous. ‘Are you trying to tell me that you wouldn’t have succumbed to his charms?’

‘I’d have made him wait.’

‘Yeah, sure you would.’ Jessica clamped her lips shut. She would never ever dream of telling another woman of what had gone on behind closed doors, but surely Willow must realise that there were some men who were simply impossible to resist, and Salvatore was one of them.

‘But I wonder why he chose you,’ pondered Willow thoughtfully, and it was only when she saw the expression on Jessica’s face that she attempted to take some of the sting out of the question. ‘I mean—isn’t it a bit risky, Jessica? You work there, and everything.’

‘You mean I clean his office,’ said Jessica, her cheeks flushing with defiant pride. ‘And if you really want to know why I think he chose me, Willow…’ Because surely if you forced yourself to face the fundamental truth in a situation, then you removed its ability to cause you pain? It was only when you ran from the truth that you were in trouble.

‘I think it’s precisely because I do clean his office,’ she continued slowly. ‘I know my place and I’m not a threat. We can have…fun…but without him worrying that he might have to make some kind of commitment to me.’ She forced herself to remember his stark words about going back to marry a Sicilian virgin. ‘Because it isn’t going to happen.’

‘And did he…’ Willow began to fiddle self-consciously with her hair ‘…did he happen to mention me?’

A crueller person than Jessica might have rubbed it in that the Sicilian hadn’t even remembered Willow’s name. But Jessica was not cruel, and anyway she doubted that the sunnily confident blonde would have believed her.
