Richard Blanco was selected by President Obama to be the fifth inaugural poet in history, joining the ranks of such luminary poets as Robert Frost, Maya Angelou, Miller Williams, and Elizabeth Alexander. He is the youngest person and the first Latino and openly gay man to have received this honor. On January 21, 2013, he read his original poem âOne Todayâ written for the occasion as an honorary participant in the official inaugural ceremony themed âFaith in Americaâs Future,â commemorating our nationâs perseverance.
Blancoâs work focuses on universal themes of identity in his three award-winning collections of poetry: City of a Hundred Fires, winner of the Agnes Lynch Starrett Poetry Prize; Directions to the Beach of the Dead, recipient of the Beyond Margins Award from the PEN American Center; and Looking for The Gulf Motel, winner of the 2013 Paterson Poetry Prize and the Thom Gunn Award from the Publishing Triangle.
He has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning, National Public Radioâs All Things Considered and Fresh Air with Terry Gross, as well as major media in the United States and from around the world, including CNN and its AC360, Telemundo, the BBC, Univision, and PBS. His work has appeared in The Best American Poetry, The Norton Anthology of Latino Literature, and Great American Prose Poems, as well as in top literary journals, including the Nation, the New Republic, Ploughshares, and Michigan Quarterly Review. He is a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow, a Fellow of the Bread Loaf Writersâ Conference, and a recipient of two Florida Artist Fellowships.
Richard Blanco was made in Cuba, assembled in Spain, and imported to the United Statesâmeaning his mother, seven months pregnant, and the rest of the family arrived as exiles from Cuba to Madrid, where he was born. Only forty-five days later the family emigrated once more and settled in New York City, then eventually to Miami, where he was raised and educated. A builder of cities as well as poems, he holds a bachelor of science in civil engineering and a master of fine arts in creative writing. He currently lives in Bethel, Maine.
