It is thus rather important to look closely at the graphs in Figs 12.7 and 12.8, showing loanwords from each source as a proportion of all new words in each half-century. The combined totals in Fig. 12.8 show a much less dramatic picture than Fig. 12.5. Loanwords from French, Latin, and French and/or Latin collectively make up 29% of all OED first attestations even in the second half of the twelfth century and over 30% in both halves of the thirteenth century. There is still, though, a substantial increase in the fourteenth century, only now both halves of the fourteenth century show similarly high levels, with loanwords from these sources making up 47% of all new words in the first half of the fourteenth century and 48% in the second, before the level falls away a little in the fifteenth century.
