RAYLA SAW AGENT KELTRY the moment the hostess began leading her and Gram to their table. Shock teemed over her like a bucket of ice water, and her heart skipped two beats while she swore it descended into her stomach, past her noodled knees, and right into her feet. Clamping her jaw shut, she willed her heart to start beating again and put one wobbly leg in front of the other, hopeful he hadn’t noticed her shaking. He was looking right at her.

She certainly would have chosen the seat with her back to him if Gram hadn’t already taken it. Since she couldn’t very well sit on the same side of the booth, she slipped into the seat opposite her grandmother—probably the one seat in the entire restaurant that put Keltry directly in her sights every time she looked up. She did her best to stay buried behind the menu for as long as possible, but eventually, she had to relinquish her shield. And there he was, in all of his hot, sexy glory, staring and smiling.

Despite feeling like she might have a stroke right there, his smile revealed he hadn’t recognized her … Didn’t it? Much more likely he’d be looking at her with a furrowed brow or narrowed eyes than smiling seductively. Shoot, if he thought for a second she was the thief that took him down early this morning, he’d be over here arresting her. He’s attracted to you, dipshit! Take the compliment and flirt back. “I’ll say one thing for you, dear—you’ve got excellent taste. He’s some looker, and he seems to be looking at you the same way you’re looking at him.”

“Guilty,” she responded. There was no way in hell she was telling Gram the full story. Let her overly captivated grandmother think this was a harmless flirting contest between complete strangers.

A minute or so later, Rayla saw him read a text after which he turned toward the bar and accepted a menu. Someone was a no-show. Some woman stood up this phenomenal-looking man? She only knew a few things about him: He was incredibly good-looking, a trained combatant, and a fed. He probably has the personality of a wet dishrag, or worse. He wasn’t married; at least he wasn’t wearing a ring. Maybe he’s a cheater, and his date tonight just found out. That wasn’t it. She was a good judge of character. This guy wasn’t a cheater or a jerk. She’d seen no telltale signs of a ring ever having been on his left hand, not this morning or now. Much more likely it was the woman who was the jerk.

When their food arrived, Rayla suddenly had no appetite. Yes, Agent Adonis gave her
