Next day the bonding company sent over a list of Terra wholesalers and employees. The employee forms had copies of the bonding company’s clearance sheets. Connell sat down with the list and poured over it.

John was watching him do so.

When Connell was done, John was waiting.

Connell flipped the sheets onto the desk. “All sterling characters. Hardly a parking fine in the bunch.”

“What now?”

“Now I guess we’ll have to go back to the plant and shake the bushes a bit. Do a walk-through. Let everyone know what’s up this time. See if anyone catches our eye.”

“Your buddy, Jamieson. He ain’t gonna like that.”

“Yeah, I’m sure. But he might just dislike it so much that he remembers something he forgot to tell us.”

John made a could be shrug.

Connell’s internal line buzzed. He picked it up and listened for a moment.

“Really?” he said. “We’ll be right over.” He set the phone down. “That was Nashua Street. Mr. Snake has decided it’s time to talk. You up for a drive?”

“Sure,” John said. “I loves stomping snakes.”

When they arrived at the jail, Snake was already in one of the interview rooms with his lawyer.

“We want to know, up front,” the lawyer said, “what kind of break my client gets if he talks.”

“Gee, first time I’ve head that demand,” Connell said, sitting down. Morgan pulled up a chair beside him and leaned back. Let Connell run with it.

“Here’s what I can tell your client,” Connell said. “Unless he talks now, we just scrap this whole discussion and move forward. We’ve already got him in the can and we’ve got a lot of work to do. So, this ones’ a done deal to u. If your boy wants any kind of intervention by us on his behalf, right now in this room is the time and place to get that ball rolling.”

“Exactly, what is he charged with?”

Connell raised his hands in a silly-me-I-forgot gesture.

“You know what? The paper work’s back at my desk. Can you believe I forgot to fill it in last night? I’ll do it when I get back.”

Snake and his lawyer knew what that meant. There was still time to change the course of this thing. They exchanged long looks. Connell held all the cards and Snake was going away unless Connell got what he wanted: a name.

They could all see that Snake was getting restless, caving, getting ready to spill.

“Okay,” the lawyer said. “Two conditions. My client walks on a drunk and disorderly and he doesn’t end up in court on a witness stand. He tells you a name— he doesn’t tell the world. The people he’s dealing with— my client wouldn’t last the day if word got out he talked.”

Connell knew that better even than the lawyer did.

‘I’ve done this before,” Connell said. “Lots of times. Nothing slips out. So we’re agreed?”

“I want to see the charge sheet first,” the lawyer said. “Do you have to go back for it?”

“You know what?” Connell said. “I just remembered. I stuck it in my pocket on the way out the door.
