Chapter 12
As Alex raced for the front door, he nearly collided with the EMS team taking their patient out on a gurney. Alice Parsons and John Sumter had been to the inn before, more than Alex would ever admit to any of his guests. Vince Darcy lay strapped to the gurney, a bloody compress taped to his thigh. The manâs face was ghostly pale.
âWhat happened?â Alex asked.
Vince said, âI canât believe it. I was out running and somebody shot me.â
Alex asked, âDid you see who did it?â
Vince shuddered once, then said, âNo, I was in the woods, and you know how dense it is. Listen, I need somebody to go tell Laura. Sheâs in town shopping.â
âWeâll find her,â Elise said as she rushed up beside Alex. âAre you going to be okay?â
âIt hurts like a dog, but they tell me Iâm going to be fine,â Vince said. âMan, Iâm not going to be able to run for a month.â
âAnother three or four inches and you wouldnât have been able to make it back to the inn,â one of the attendants said. âYou were lucky.â
âI wasnât lucky enough for them to miss.â
As they loaded Vince into the ambulance, Alex asked Alice, âWill he be okay?â
âItâs not for me to say, but it looks like the bullet just grazed him.â
âMy legâs killing me, thereâs nothing âjustâ about that,â Vince protested.
Alice shrugged. âItâs probably going to leave a scar, but Johnâs right; Mr. Darcy, youâre luckier than you realize.â
Alex asked, âDid anybody call Armstrong?â
âOne of his deputies is on the way.â
âThanks for showing up so fast,â Alex said to them as they closed the ambulance door. After the vehicle took off, Alex told Elise, âIâd better go into town and find Laura. Do you want to ride in with me?â
Elise said, âIâd like to, but somebody needs to stay behind and take care of things here.â
Alex nodded. âWe can swap jobs if youâd like.â
Elise said, âNo thanks, Iâd rather not have to tell a guest her husband was shot at the inn.â
âYeah, youâve got a point. Iâll be back as soon as I can find her.â
âCall me if you hear anything else about Vince,â she said.
âI promise. And Elise? Maybe you should stay away from cleaning windows this afternoon.â
âYou canât think Iâm in danger of being shot, Alex. Surely this was just an unfortunate accident.â
âYouâre probably right, but Iâd feel better if you stayed inside,â Alex said.
âI will. Thereâs plenty for me to do around here.â
As Alex drove back to town in search of Laura, he tried to think who might have shot his guest. Could it have been an accident, as Elise clearly thought, some fool plinking cans in the woods without realizing how far his bullets traveled, or was it something more sinister than that? Had Vince, in his incessant jogging around the lands that encircled the inn, stumbled across something he shouldnât have seen? No, Alex realized it was most likely an accident. After all, there wasnât anything going on around Hatteras West that he didnât know about.
