Now on to the case: for this book we are making a flat back book, which means the case is made from three pieces of board rather than two as you did with the pamphlet binding. With this method of binding you are keeping the spine flat (hence flat back binding).

So on to your case, the measurements are similar to your pamphlet – keep the square in mind and make sure you measure twice and cut once.

1. You need to cut your grey boards so they are long grain, – so the grain is going from the head to tail. Their height is the height of your book block plus 6mm; the width is the width of your block MINUS 3mm – this is because your case will have an 8mm gap at the spine so will push the board out.

2. Cut the grey boards using a scalpel and mat, then place them either side of your book block. Measure the width of the spine plus the two boards – this is the width of your third piece of grey board – your spine piece. This needs to be the same height as your grey boards for the covers.

3. So you now have three pieces of grey board: 2 x covers (boards) and 1 x spine.

Bone folder.
