âCompletely unacceptable,â Steph Brown almost screeched as soon as the words had finished leaving DI Austinâs lips. âThis type of treatment is normally reserved for criminals who are awaiting trial.â
âHe says that he fears for his life,â Liv stated, believing that was the only thing thatâd come out of the former copperâs mouth that actually wasnât bullshit.
âNeil Heatonâs conviction was seen as one of the greatest moral victories that the police force had ever achieved,â Steph outlined, clearly reciting the words of whoeverâs arms sheâd been trying to twist. âEven with the shit that wasnât proven. And now youâre asking me to undo all of that.â
âYou think itâs not frustrating for me to hear?â Dean asked. âIâm the one who helped put him away in the first place. Believe me, maâam, this is painful for me to do.â
âHe still hasnât explained why he gave up the name of a dead man, has he?â Steph asked rhetorically. âBecause itâs going to take a lot of goodwill and no end of arm-twisting to get him out of that prison. And believe me, Iâll probably have to bribe some people to let him out.â
âWe leave him in there and heâs going to end up dead sooner or later,â Liv declared, wondering if the inmates were already planning their next attack.
âYeah, Iâm not so sure about that,â Dean mused, rubbing his chin thoughtfully.
âYou have a theory you want to share with the rest of us, DI Lawrence?â DCI Brown requested. âCome on, donât keep us in suspense.â
âPeople know that heâs grassed on us, or at least is trying to grass,â the inspector continued. âNormally, once word gets out about a rat in the prison system, they typically have a very low life expectancy, and that guy was on his own and completely vulnerable. If they wanted him dead, they could have left him with a lot more than a broken arm.â
âMaybe it was a warning,â DCI Brown suggested. âMaybe they thought that was enough. I mean heâs had a fair bit of protection up to this point, so maybe they just didnât want to take it any further.â
Dean nodded his head slowly, but it was clear he wasnât fully accepting of the explanation. And Liv knew this wasnât simply a case of being blindsided by Heaton.
âRegardless,â DCI Brown interrupted, trying to draw the topic away from speculation, âright now, heâs on a list. And we all know once youâre on it, thereâs no getting off it.â
âIf we were going to have Heaton in protective custody, then weâd need someone who can keep a close eye on him,â Liv noted. âSomeone who canât be easily bullshitted and can put Heaton in his place if need be.â She just realised she had described the perfect person, prompting DCI Brown to sigh.
âOh, Jesus, no, DI Austin, not bloodyâ¦â
