“Jesus, slow down!” Liam held onto the door handle for support but it was no use. He flung from side to side in the passenger seat despite the seat belt locking into place.

“No way. We need to keep up.” Michelle’s eyes were narrowed slits and he hadn’t seen her blink in the last ten minutes.

Up ahead the van with the Bone Saw logo swerved every few moments, like the driver was drunk out of his mind. Having met Clive, Liam wouldn’t have been surprised. You’d need to be drunk to deal with a bastard like that every day.

Eventually the van turned onto a less-populated road, in a section of town housing more rednecks than tourists. After another mile it slowed and turned left, traveling a dirt path. Liam knew exactly where that road ended. If you followed it all the way, you’d wind up back in the town center, but along the way, you’d see a large Victorian mansion that looked ready to crumble. “Scary Harry,” he said.

“What?” It was the first time she’d looked away from the windshield.

Liam nodded toward the path as they slowed. “A crazy guy lives up this way. They call him Scary Harry. His parents are rich or something. They bought him the house to keep him out of trouble.”

“What kind of trouble?”

“The kind that involves screeching obscenities at the playground and pissing your pants in the supermarket.”

“The house? Is it rundown?”

“From what I’ve heard. To tell you the truth I’ve never seen it myself. We used to tell ghost stories about the guy. How he lived in a haunted mansion and stole children from the beach. Chopped them up and made them into stews.”

“Charming. Looks like you’re going to see the place after all.” She turned onto the path and cut the lights, keeping her distance. It seemed wrong for a shiny new Lexus to be out here in the woods.

“She’s going to kill you,” Liam said. “Jacqueline, I mean. You scratch this thing up and she’s going to have a shit conniption.”

“Let her. I can’t believe you hang out with that bitch.”

“It’s not by choice. Corey is smitten with her. Don’t ask me why but he is.” He thought back to the way his friend had looked, furious as he held his thrashing girlfriend. Getting kicked in the balls hadn’t helped matters much. But maybe if Corey was his real friend, he wouldn’t have let his girlfriend speak to Liam that way in the first place. “I should thank you.”

“For what?”

“For sticking up for me back there. She said a lot of nasty stuff. You didn’t let her off the hook but you could have. You could’ve walked away.”

“I guess I could have.” She squeezed his thigh, sending fireworks throughout his body.

A few yards ahead the trees opened up to a large clearing. Scary Harry estate came into view. It was worse than he’d imagined. The peeling paint, rotten siding, and loose shingles made his skin run cold. “Can’t we just go back
