(a) The incision can be made within attached gingiva that is more than 3 mm wide. Precise flap reflection with a sharp periosteal elevator totally denudes the bone but does not damage the soft tissues.
(b) The completed osteotomy reveals that the roots of the mandibular incisors can be avoided by using a surgical marker to indicate their location.
