Chapter 8

Mr. BHAVE—A TRAGEDY OF MARRIED LIFE

One evening Mr. Bhave called on me.

A handsome, fair, tall and well built person of around 55 years of age visited our house. Extremely curt in his talk, Mr. Bhave can never be courteous in his conversation!

Mr. Bhave asked, “Is anyone else in the house?”

I told him, “All have gone for shopping. I am alone. What can I do for you?”

“Can you please close the door?”

I closed the door.

“I want to cry.”

“Please go ahead.”

Mr. Bhave started right in earnest; it was no ordinary crying; it was like the wailing of a woman in deep, acute sorrow! Initially I was shocked; I had never seen a gentleman crying in this manner.

He stopped in between to explain to me his problem but he could not utter a single word and started crying again, this went on for quite some time; I allowed him to finish the bout which ended after about 45 minutes. He composed himself, went to the bathroom and became fresh; I made some tea for him; he liked it; then he started talking.

“My life is ruined Mr. Kakade.”

“What happened?”

“My whole life is reduced to dust,”

“When did this happen? Till yesterday you were fine, Mr. Bhave! When exactly did this happen?”

“It happened the day I got married, 30 years back!”

I could make a rough guess of his problem; “what about your life before that?”

“I was very happy and contended before marriage. I used to get whatever I asked for; I thought of something and it was there; I think GOD was totally happy with me; there was nothing I could not get once I wished for it, so once I prayed to GOD, ‘O GOD! You have been so kind and generous to me; please do not desert me after my marriage!’ But HE dismissed my prayer, he just crushed me.”

“Can you please be precise?”

“I did not get what I needed, what I wanted so dearly; in fact I got nothing and my life has ended leaving me high and dry!”

“You are only 55 Mr. Bhave! This is no end at all.”

“I have reached 55 years of age; what is left now?”

“I disagree with you. Many men marry at 55, begin their married life with full enthusiasm; there are many things which one can do even after 55! Life never ends, Mr. Bhave. In fact there are many activities which are waiting for you to do!”

“But the time for doing certain things has already gone; what can be done for those things?”

“Can you be specific, Mr. Bhave?”

Mr. Bhave composed himself; pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket and glancing at the noting, he said, “Let me tell you what type of woman my wife is! I have been married to this woman for thirty years and have lived with her that long!”

Mr. Bhave handed me a note which listed 19 accusations/complaints against his wife; following is the gist of those:

“I am fair and smart but she is not beautiful; she totally lacks sex appeal.
