Our campsite was deep in the forest alongside a stream. It was no small hike to reach it, but it had a good mix of shade and dappled sunlight and plenty of cleared space for our tents. We’d just started getting set up when the radio at Jericho’s side crackled. I glanced up, curious. Cell phones rarely worked up here, so the radio had been more an emergency safety measure than anything else.

“Jericho, do you copy?”

Dropping what he was doing, Jericho plucked it off his belt. “I copy, Kenny. What’s up?”

A rapid-fire conversation followed, Jericho’s frown deepening by the second. “Give me a minute,” he said finally.

Jax had been listening, too. “You need to go,” he summarized.

“Emergency rescue situation,” Jericho said shortly. “In my corner of the park along clan boundaries. They can have a chopper pick me up a mile or so back.”

“Go,” Jax said simply. “We’ll stay here till you get back. No rush.”

“You’re sure?” Jericho’s eyes flicked to me.

I huffed and waved him off. “It’s fine. Go.”

He got back on the radio. A few minutes later he was jogging out of the clearing, leaving me alone with Jax. “Well,” Jax grinned. “Guess we’ll have to double-time set up.”

Still feeling playful and light, I shrugged and grabbed my tent. “Get moving, then.” Winking over my shoulder, I got started.
