The Perkins engine is a popular choice for many boatsâand with good reason. Based on an industrial engine, it will run for years, parts are readily available, and almost every yard is familiar with it.
engines should cost significantly more than industrial engines and that they should be replaced after a short life span. Many sailors believe this and are quite prepared to spend many dollars replacing a diesel with relatively low hours on it.
Common wisdom has it that a new engine is always more reliable than an old one. Common wisdom has some merit. Unless it is really badly installed, a new engine will be more reliableâat least for several years. But is laying out $15,000 your best option?
