Having her back in my apartment was fantastic. It felt like my home for the first time in months. Then again, I was in a great mood, so that might have had something to do with it.
She sat down, shedding the thick black hoody she wore before kicking off her sneakers and removing not one, but two pairs of socks.
I couldn’t take my eyes off her as she stripped, half amused, half aroused. I tried to get my thoughts back into the safe zone. “Want me to get you a pair of slippers or something?”
“Nope. It’s really warm in here. I didn’t want to get too hot before I had to go back out there and freeze again.” She grinned. “So what are we going to do for the next few hours?”
“Before we do anything”—I sat across from her—“we need to re-establish the ground rules.”
“Re-establish the ground rules?” She thought about it for a minute, then she nodded. “Sounds like a plan.”
“One: Whatever we talk about, whatever we tell each other, whatever we do, stays between you and me. I don’t share with my friends. You don’t share with yours.”
She nodded, agreeing with the new rule as a little smile twisted her lips.
“Two: We acknowledge we’re attracted to each other because there really is no need to deny it. Three: Doesn’t apply to us. Four—”
“How does number three not apply?” she interrupted with a frown. “You have Whitney.”
“Whit and I aren’t a couple.”
“But…” She looked taken aback. “At the party…”
“You never let me explain.” I dismissed with a wave. “No. I do not have a girlfriend. So number three does not apply to us.”
“It doesn’t matter whether or not it applies at this moment. Because it might be important later on.” Her head slid from side to side like a vertical bobble head with an attitude. “Three: Our significant others come first. We don’t ignore them or blow them off to spend time with each other.”
“Fine.” I let her include three, although I knew it would never matter. Neither one of us was going to date other people. Not if I had anything to say about it. “So I assume you still want to include four?”
She showed me her braces in a toothy grin. “Four: We can talk about whoever we’re dating, but we can never complain to each other about said partner.”
I nodded. “Five was we never talk about sex, but I feel like that one doesn’t apply. If you think it does, we need to discuss that again.”
“Six.” She sighed. “It was six that doesn’t apply anymore. It was that we couldn’t be alone here. Then we changed it to anywhere. Then we threw it out.”
“Are you sure?”
She nodded.
“And number seven?” I asked, raking my brain to remember. “We changed number seven to say that we will forget. When we’re alone, it’s okay to forget.”
“I guess we should have written them down, huh?”
“Apparently.”
“So which ones are we keeping?” Her fingertips drew little designs on the table top as she spoke, but it didn’t hide her nervousness from me.
