"That was quick," Clara said, getting in the front seat of their car after Brian stopped on the road's narrow shoulder.

"I wasn't far away when you called. How was your morning?" Brian asked, as Dani and Liz buckled themselves in the back seat.

"Disappointing," Clara said, her hand raised to shield her eyes from the late morning sun. "We found the entrance to the cavern, right where the letter said it would be. There's one problem, though. It's filled with so much sand that you can't get in. Dani and Liz think the river probably flooded from storms over the years and washed the sand in."

"Is there much water in the river now?"

"That depends on what you mean by 'much,'" Dani said. "It's flowing pretty fast; I wouldn't be surprised to find several feet of water in the deep spots."

"That'll do, then," Brian said. "We can clear it."

"What do you mean?" Clara asked.

"If there's plenty of water, we'll rig a pump and use river water to wash the sand out."

"That would attract attention," Dani said. "The river's clean and clear. People downstream would be bound to notice if it suddenly turned murky for no reason."

"Yeah, that's true. But we could work around that somehow, assuming we get permission to excavate the cave. We could work at night, or maybe during heavy rain. Runoff from a good storm would probably cover our tracks. It would depend on how much sand is packed in there."

"There could be a lot. The letter said it opens up into a big cavern after that bend to the left," Clara said. "If that's filled in, who knows how much sand there is?"

"Could you get to the bend?"

"Yes, barely. That's where I got stuck."

"You got stuck? You okay?"

"Fine. It scared me silly, but Dani and Liz got me out in no time."

"Well, that's good. Thanks for saving her, ladies."

"Not a big deal," Dani said.

"Just part of exploring caves," Liz said.

"How was your meeting?" Clara asked.

"Great! It's just what we were hoping for. Hats off to Doug for finding this guy."

"Well, tell us about him, then."

"His name's Hervé Chennault. He's in his 60s, I'd guess. He's a lawyer; he has an office in Morne Rouge. I'm not sure if he does much work, though. I suspect he's semi-retired. But the most important thing is that he owns the land where the cave is. It's been in his family for generations."

"Did you tell him anything?" Clara asked.

"Only that you guys were hiking out in that area. He wanted to know why you went there, given that it's such rough terrain. I told him you were a historian, and that we came to Martinique because you were doing research on partisan activity during the Second World War. I explained that your research pointed to camps and supply stashes in this part of the island."

"Any reaction from him?"

"Yeah. He wants to meet you and learn more about your research. His grandfather was a partisan."

"What's your take on him?" Clara asked. "Think we can work with him?"

"Maybe.
