The fact that the Blue Division, composed as it was of men originating from a Mediterranean country, did not crumble in those terrible winter conditions is a tribute to its fighting spirit. In the second winter of 1943 the situation improved, as the Wehrmacht distributed adequate clothing and the division’s new deployment (around Leningrad) near the Baltic Sea meant temperatures were not as low as those experienced the previous winter.

Veterans remembered the cold as one of the most difficult experiences of the campaign and it was always a matter of pride for them that they had overcome it.
