I shoved my way towards Zapato, which was no mean feat considering the pavements and walkways of Kent Village were packed with Christmas shoppers. Fairy lights twinkled prettily in the fading afternoon light, but my sour mood prevented me from appreciating any of it. I slipped into the store and made my way to my office unnoticed. Or so I thought.

“You look like shit!” Maddy stood in the doorway.

“Because I feel like shit,” I mumbled. “I’m a terrible person, Maddy.” To my utter horror, I burst into tears. Maddy quickly stepped into my office and closed the door. She wrapped her arms around me and cooed nonsense until my sobs dissipated. I was a pathetic excuse for a decent human being. I told her a PG rated version of the past day’s events.

“I knew he had the hots for you!” she exclaimed.

“Not helping,” I mumbled. She apologised. Maddy and I were great friends. We’d known each other since nursery school and I admit to giving her the job for selfish reasons. She was, however, fantastic at all aspects of retail and customer service. I was sure she would get her own branch soon. If things worked out, perhaps she could fill the vacancy when I left. If Jonah still wanted me. “If I tell you something, you have to promise to keep it a secret.” I knew she would; Maddy was totally trustworthy. I proceeded to tell her about Jonah’s job offer.

“Bloody hell, E.” Only Maddy was allowed to call me that. It stemmed from when we were little and she couldn’t say Elvis. “You absolutely have to go for it. Your talents are wasted here. You outgrew this place months ago.”

“It’s a bit of a leap don’t you think? Going from being a store manager to running the entire village.”

“All the branch managers and store owners will love you. And you have the advantage of knowing both sides of the coin. Come on, Elvis. Put those A-level Business Management classes to good use, eh? I have faith in you.”

I pulled Maddy on to my lap and hugged her. “You have to say that, I’m your boss,” I mumbled into her soft curly hair.

“You’re my best friend first, E. I wouldn’t lie to you.” Maddy wiped my eyes with the pads of her thumbs, retrieved a tissue from her pocket and held it to my nose. “Blow, you’re all snotty.” She made me giggle. I took the tissue and wiped my nose.

“I feel a bit better, thank you, darling.” I kissed her. She hopped off my lap and returned to the shop floor while I made myself look respectable. I had a spare eye liner and mascara in my desk drawer, along with some lip gloss and bronzer. That would do for now.
